I decided to read this because I watched the first season of the show on SyFy, and really enjoyed it.

 

I'm glad I made that decision. The book was wonderful, and sci-fi/space operas are not my normal genres.

 

The tv show followed the plot of the book very closely, with the exception of some storylines/characters being introduced into the show earlier than they did in the book series. I'd say the first season of the show covers about 3/4 of this book...give or take.

 

The story is told via the alternating POV of Miller, a downtrodden police detective, and Holden, an idealistic young XO on a ice hauling ship.

 

Miller is looking for a missing young woman, Holden is trying to keep himself and his crew alive after they stumble upon something they shouldn't.

 

The two stories run parallel to each other for awhile, but once they merge, then story really gets going.

 

Add in a potential war between Earth and Mars with a fringe group also in play, and you end up with a very exciting story. It made a very long book seem much shorter than it actually was.
