How to Entice an Enchantress: The Duchess Diaries

How to Entice an Enchantress - Karen Hawkins

*I won this book through Goodreads FirstReads Giveaways.*

This book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in Regency Era Scotland, and the third in a series.

I've not read the first two books, and gather that some of the events mentioned in this book take place in one of the previous novels, but as the author recalled those events in this book with plenty of detail, the book worked just fine as a standalone for me.

I ended up enjoying this book way more than I thought I was going to, and it was way funnier than I realized it was going to be.

For example:

The scene where Kirk and Dahlia share their first kiss had me utterly in stitches even as I was mortified on both their behalves. I mean 'going horribly wrong' isn't even strong enough to describe it.

(show spoiler)

I loved both Dahlia and Kirk, and loved the way both characters grew and changed as the book progressed. I found I was really rooting for them to get their HEA, and the way it worked out was so very satisfying to me. Though, I would have actually loved a longer epilogue that showed us the pair a bit further into their relationship.

I absolutely adored the secondary characters, especially the Duchess of Roxburghe (and her pugs), Charlotte, Freya, and MacCreedy (who was especially hilarious).

I am definitely planning to check out more of Ms. Hawkins' other books.
